History and Mission
The Williamsburg Symphonia was founded in 1984 by Carl Andersen, Elnore Andersen, Marian Harding, Mary Selby and Rebecca Siegel for the purpose of presenting educational programs for children featuring classical music (Peter and the Wolf was the first). Their initial performances were so well received that the founders planned a schedule of concerts for the general public. Under Music Director Janna Hymes, The Williamsburg Symphonia continues to introduce young audiences to classical music in a way they can enjoy and understand, and it presents subscription concerts and special events that attract a wide following and achieve critical acclaim. For information about our current season offerings, visit Scheduled Events.
The Williamsburg Symphonia's success over the past twenty-five years is driven by its adherence to a threefold mission:
- Present the highest quality performances of great music, bringing regional and national distinction to the orchestra and the greater Williamsburg community;
- Delight and educate diverse audiences of all ages, as a vigorous component of the cultural fabric of greater Williamsburg; and
- Operate in a financially sound manner .
