The Williamsburg Symphonia's extensive education and outreach programs have delighted thousands of young people and earned the praise and gratitude of parents and teachers. Orchestral leaders and teachers alike believe that music encourages children to be more creative and strengthens listening and language skills. Each year our Symphonia orchestra members go to area schools to perform great music, and hundreds of families come to concerts specially designed for them.
For Schools and Teachers
During the 2008-2009 school year The Williamsburg Symphonia's Education arm brought its Meet the Musicians program to fifteen public schools in Williamsburg/James City County and York County plus two area private schools. "Everything You Wanted to know about Brass" presented by the Eastern Virginia Brass Trio was enthusiastically received by students and faculty. Over 2,000 fourth- and fifth-grade students enjoyed the experience.
Rawls Byrd School fifth-grade students are shown with members of the trio (Robert Spaeth, trumpet; Robert Ford, trombone; and Marlene Ford, horn) and their "props" in February.
This popular program will return to the schools, beginning in January 2010. A new group of fourth graders will be given an opportunity to learn about music in this innovative manner.
This year The Williamsburg Symphonia will launch another new initiative - Instruments for Kids. Thanks to a generous grant, the Education arm of the Symphonia will be able to provide instruments to deserving students who otherwise would not have the means to participate in a music program. In addition to providing the instruments, the grant will fund music lessons for those students who desire them. The program will be limited to ten students in W/JCC and ten in York County the first year. It is hoped that the programs can be expanded in future years and that more students can be served.
For Kids and Families
This year The Williamsburg Symphonia is presenting a special Family Concert series at the Kimball Theatre. Creatively themed, the programs also feature post-concert activities, such as instrument demonstrations and hands-on experiences with instruments from the various orchestral sections. These delightful concerts will present a wonderful opportunity to introduce young children to symphonic music and musicians.
