Göran Marcusson, flute

Marcusson did not embark upon his musical career until the age of twenty-four, having worked previously as a bricklayer and tram driver. He earned international acclaim for the first time in 1987 when he won the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition, which was followed in rapid succession by an award at Crussellweek in Finland and a prize at the 1991 Bodensee Music Competition. In 1992, the same year he was granted his Soloist Diploma from the University of Gothenberg, he was awarded a Waterford Crystal flute, the prize for his outstanding performance at the Vienna Music Competition in the master class taught by James Galway.

He has played principal flute with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Cadaques and the London Symphony Orchestra. Today Marcusson holds a position in GöteborgsMusiken Chamber Ensemble and manages to keep a busy international schedule, giving solo appearances and master classes in the United States, South America, Taiwan and throughout Europe. For eight consecutive years he has been one of the artists at the Newport, R.I., Music Festival. In September 2006 he performed the newly written Mike Mower flute concerto at the National Orchestra Hall in Taipei, Taiwan, and in Göteborg, Sweden. Last October and November his American tour started in Mexico City and ended in North Carolina; it was a "Mostly Mozart" festival which included the Flute Concerto No. 2 in C Major.

Marcusson's CDs have received rave reviews and include The Swedish Romantic Flute, with the strings of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; The Nordic Flute, with the Camerata Roman; and American Sonatas. His latest recording, Inspiration by Bach, was released in November 2006 on the Naxos label and features the Suite No. 2 in B Minor, Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and many other beautiful arrangements. The ensemble in this recording is the recently formed Camrata Calluna.
